“Some are born great, others achieve greatness.” — William Shakespeare

When we are born we are all born very open to the world. We don’t have prejudice, we don’t need to practice tolerance, and we know that all of our needs are going to be met. We aren’t worried about impressing people, and we aren’t easily offended. We can just be.

When you come into this world and interact in society you begin to gain different perspectives.

As you get older, you should be becoming a better version of yourself. However, that’s the ideal. Far too many of us stray from that idealized version of life, and live closed-mindedly. We all need to be reminded to make decisions that help you fulfill your dreams. Many people work dead-end jobs and are torturing themselves and living for other people.

Instead, we should seek to become knowledge rich.

One of the people who helped me to realize this is Will Smith. Aside from being the Freshest Prince in all of the land of Bel Air, he is also a huge motivation to me.

His movies are funny, creative, and he always tries to embody a better version of himself — well, maybe not in Hancock.

His career has taken some dips and turns over the years, but he always somehow comes out ahead. He’s been in some bad movies — Wild, Wild West — and some good ones — Men In Black. However, his ability to adapt as an artist makes him stand out.

He is always preaching positivity on Instagram, and is a proponent of doing the best work possible. I like that a lot.

It’s no coincidence that Will is one of my favorites, because he is very open to life and the universe.

His Instagram documents this journey by showing how he is able to conquer his inner demons and move past his limits.

Will Smith is known for playing a diverse set of roles. From iRobot, to Pursuit of Happiness he is able to really work hard at maintaining his characters while moving past his boundaries.

Admittedly, Pursuit of Happiness is my favorite Will Smith film because I can relate to the struggle for finding the American Dream. In the movie, he is constantly asking himself this one simple question how do I get out of where I’m at today? He is facing a continuous battle that I still fight today: the need for other people’s validation. We all need validation from time to time, however. People always need validation. As entrepreneurs, parents, and even friends we need validation that we are doing well, and that what we put our efforts into pays off for us in the long run.

One of the biggest things on my mind right now, as I think about why Will Smith is so important to me, is that he has validated himself over and over again.

Even though I’ve helped major companies reach pivotal milestones in their journeys (including two 9-figure buy-outs) I’m still focusing on launching Glyder’s new Beard Oil product. This launch is so important to me because my effort is always 110% committed to the next thing. The best people in the world don’t stop after they achieve a certain level of success, they keep going and they get the job done. I won’t stop until I get to a point where my brand says it all.

Will Smith doesn’t need any more validation, he’s already made it.

I am still looking for validation — Pursuit of Happiness spoke to me because of the way he plays that character. In the film, he tells his son,  “don’t ever let someone tell you what you can and cannot do!”

I don’t care what other people think about me, I only care what I think about me, and whether or not I’m doing the best I possibly can at what I’ve set out to do.

Another reason that I wrote this post is because Will Smith is a badass dad. The way he motivates his son and daughter is the way I want to motivate people around me. I am so inspired by the way that he leads his family and others, that I want to emulate that in my business, and I hope to be able to practice it with my family someday.

What do you like best about Will Smith? Are there other people you look up to based on the movies they make, or the music they record, or the books they write? I’d love to hear more!

Stay Uncomfortable,
